As a child I longed for a dog, but had to make do with borrowing friends’ dogs whenever they would let me.
When I was 29 I broke my spine in a motorcycle accident and it became clear I would never be able to return to full-time work, but this gave me the opportunity to finally get a dog of my own.
After getting my first greyhound, Fen, I was fascinated by the clear definition of her muscles and wanted to learn what I was seeing. My injury also meant I had some understanding of chronic pain and how it affects the body and mind. So when I was approached by someone looking for a case study for her own Galen training, I jumped at the chance for Fen to be treated and for me to learn a bit more.
My second greyhound, Logan, also benefitted from massage in later life, particularly fascial release, and he absolutely loved it, though I always had to hoover the therapist down afterwards as he shed so much hair!
Over the next few years I gained Level 3 and Level 4 Diplomas in Canine Behaviour and Canine Communication, but it took 14 years before I was finally in a position to start my own Galen studies. After wanting it for so long, it really does feel an achievement and a privilege to have qualified.
Dogs are such incredible creatures; I find it amazing that we can share our lives so closely with a completely different species. It is up to us to advocate for them and do our best to understand their needs and communication.
I love that Galen recognises the importance of giving advocacy to our dogs and letting them have a choice in their treatment, and the
impact that pain and discomfort can have in daily life.
